The officers of the Income tax deptt. are exposed to the rapid changes in the world of Information and communications technology. It on one hand provides solutions the daily life while on the other hand throws challenges which are difficult to counter. In last decade the computers and digital devices are not only being used for high volume data analysis and its storage but also as a medium for cheap and fast communication. Since the society finds a lot of solutions and convenience in such devices, therefore it is quite natural that such devices are used with more frequency and facility for various violations and tax evasion. Digital forensics can provide evidence of motivation, a chronology of events, insight into an evader’s interests and activities, and links among multiple offenders etc. Further, the data that is gathered when subjected to scientifically proven analyses, leads to unearthing of cases of tax evasion or financial frauds or may suggest/ indicate the same. Investigative mind set and skills are among the essential attributes that an officer of Indian revenue service is expected to possess while discharging his/her duties as tax investigators and tax administrators. It was felt that it is need of the hour that the officers who are at the cutting edge level of the department are exposed to the latest techniques of digital forensics and analysis so that they are able to handle the challenges of complexities, volumes, unpredictability, obscurity, volatility, storability, mobility, authenticity, convertibility and diversity and convert such challenge into an advantage.
